Self-Selected Reading

The Self-Selected Block provides students with opportunities to practice reading appropriate level material. This is also the area where you can incorporate all your reading strategy lessons. You should be realistic about the length of time your child can remain on task, which would be approximately 10 minutes. While the students are reading the teacher conferences with one student at a time. During this conference, the teacher asks a few questions about what they have chosen. The child then reads out loud from the selection. A running record can be completed if desired. When the timer rings, students return their books to their baskets at their tables. They then move to the rug for a group share, or book talk.
